material place(s): an exhibit
at Studio203 in Los Angeles, CA || list of participating artists to come
STATEMENT
How do you think about craft and place? Is your practice rooted in the material culture of your geographic landscape? Do you imagine place as more of an emotional or metaphorical landscape? Does thinking about material itself—where it comes from, who originally made it, and where it may go after you—enter your work? How do you engage with the landscapes of material?
Material Place(s) features artists who are engaged in critical dialogue with material and place-based practice. The exhibit will feature finished works as well as in process examples of cultivation and experimentation with material. The show will bring together artists who are engaged with a practice of transforming and integrating traditional process with contemporary and innovative technique. How is the artist's work in conversation with material and place? Does material matter? The items created and exhibited will consider the history and future of re-used materials, earth based materials, memory, and the poetic aspects of material.
